Scientific Accomplishments

Studies of AIDS course of illness evaluated psychological factors (Kemeny) and response to HAART during high autonomic nervous system activity (Cole, 2001). Immune system changes relating to stress in laboratory or natural, e.g. earthquake (Segerstrom,1998), marital conflict (Miller, Dopp, 2000), self-related emotion (Dickerson, 2004) and women with and without PTSD (Glover, 2003).
Contributions to methodology included evaluation of oral fluids are reported by

Cole, et. al. (2003)and serum for assessment of cytokines and markers of cytokine activity that were used in many studies noted above.

The Clinical Immunology Research Laboratory Core was established for the PNI and fostered the UCLA Psychoneuroimmunology program and supported PNI work of UCLA faculty graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. This laboratory will now be subsumed into the BIN Core.

Research Plans

The rapid release of proinflammatory cytokines influenced by neural and neuroendocrine factors are being studied. Investigation of Yoga impact on PNI functions are being developed. We will consult on developments in the Biology, Immunology and Neuroendocrine (BIN) Core, directed by Steve Cole.
